According to preliminary statistics released by the FBI, 57 law enforcement officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty during 2007.

By Register Staff Late New Haven police Officer Robert Fumiatti's name was added this weekend to the National Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., that honors law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.
Fumiatti died in 2007, five years after he was shot in the face by a suspected drug dealer he and members of the police narcotics squad were about to confront.

Of these felonious deaths, 10 occurred during arrest situations, 8 in traffic pursuits and stops, 7 during tactical situations, 6 while investigating suspicious persons and circumstances, 6 in ambush situations, 2 during investigative activities, 1 while responding to a disturbance call, and 1 while handling a prisoner.

An interfaith memorial service for law enforcement officers killed in the line of took on new immediacy Thursday as a local pastor announced that two more officers were killed earlier in the day while they were trying to intercept suspected illegal immigrants near Yuma, Ariz.
Thursday's deaths brought the number of U.S. officers killed on so far this year to at least 69. The toll for all of last year was 158.

According to the records kept by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund in Washington, D.C., Lauretha Vaird is one of more than 175 law enforcement officers who have been killed during a bank robbery or in pursuit of bank robbers. After Congress passed laws in 1934 to make it a federal crime to rob a bank of the Federal Reserve System, and to transport more than $5,000 worth of stolen property across state lines, the FBI and their agents became central figures in the effort to combat bank robberies.
