GREENVILLE - Local police are aggressively seeking federal and state grants to provide some relief on local property taxes.
Greenville selectmen on Wednesday gave Police Chief Scott MacMaster the go-ahead to seek a Cops Fast grant through the federal stimulus package. Under the Clinton administration, funds were pumped into a Cops Fast program to put more law enforcement officers onto the streets. Each award funded a law enforcement officer's salary for three years with the stipulation that the community getting the grant would pay for the position a fourth year.

BLUE HILL - Selectmen will move ahead with plans to end their contract for extra police coverage by the Hancock County Sheriff's Department after their discussions with the sheriff last week failed to generate an alternative plan.
The selectmen notified Sheriff William Clark earlier this month that they planned to end the contract because there were not enough funds in the law enforcement account to pay the officer's salary through the end of the year when the contract expires.

I was impressed with Nok-Noi Hauger's article on Bangor's new police chief, Ron Gastia, "New chief in town," (BDN, May 30). I recognized him (from news pictures) standing next to me at the recent graduation of new law enforcement officers from Maine Criminal Justice Academy, and offered congratulations on his appointment. His personable response to me, a total stranger, was refreshing.
The $26,000 salary difference between a seasoned law enforcement officer responsible for 100 employees in a town the size of Bangor ($79,000) and a comparatively young and inexperienced basketball coach at UMaine ($105,000) is a sad commentary on our times and misplaced values, but I guess that's show biz.

This article examines the federal government's growing use of 18 USC § 1346 to prosecute public company executives for breaching their fiduciary duties. Section 1346 is a controversial but under-examined statute making it a felony to engage in a scheme "to deprive another of the intangible right of honest services." Although enacted by Congress over twenty years ago, the Supreme Court repeatedly declined to review the statute, until now. The questions before the Supreme Court are of particular interest to public company executives and their professional advisors. Traditionally, Delaware law has governed the content and enforcement of executives' legal duties, largely protecting public company fiduciaries from civil liability. Now, with the emergence of honest services fraud as a weapon ...

Officials at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have proposed a new salary plan for Border Patrol agents that could cost them an average of $7,000 a year in lost pay and spark what some say would be an exodus of veteran agents to higher-paying agencies.
The still-pending proposal by CBP to convert Border Patrol agents from a pay program known as "Administratively Uncontrollable Overtime (AUO)" to an alternative plan called "Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP)" has been described by rank-and-file agents as "unwarranted" and comes at a time the agency has significantly increased its presence along the Southwest border to combat skyrocketing crime by brutal drug cartels.

Reactions to police pay
After reading "Budget ax spares police" (Page A-1, April 18), it is clearly obvious that the general public has not been guarding the chicken coop very closely and has been outfoxed by both the police unions and the "impartial" arbitration committee members over the course of several years.

Capsambelis summarizes a study designed to assist the Police Applicant Screening Service in formulating an effective recruitment strategy for law enforcement officer positions in Pinellas County FL. High school and college career centers, referrals from law enforcement officers, and the use of the Internet emerged as the most effective recruitment tools. Furthermore, most survey respondents saw salary and benefits as having the most bearing on choosing a law enforcement career.
