In this article, multilevel latent class analysis is used to examine the structure of heavy alcohol use. A model with three latent classes (types) of people fits the data well: those who seldom suffer major consequences from heavy drinking, those who typically suffer only a small number of major consequences, and those who suffer serious consequences in a large number of areas of their lives. Individuals in the first class tend to be older, female, with domestic partners, more highly educated, employed, and either Catholic, Muslim, or Baptist.

Regression latent class analysis was used to identify batterer subgroups with distinct violence patterns and to examine associations between class membership and adult attachment orientations as well as antisocial and borderline personality disorders. Results supported three batterer subgroups, with classes varying on frequency and severity of violence. The high-level violence class represented 40% of batterers, and both anxious and avoidant adult attachment orientations as well as borderline personality characteristics predicted membership in this class. The moderate-level violence class represented 35% of the batterers, and adult anxious attachment orientation was associated with membership in this class. The low-level violence class represented 25% of the sample and reported signific...

A progressive and hierarchical sequence of drug use suggests that a sequence of stages of drug use can describe the order by which adolescents try drugs. We propose an operational definition to test gateway relations by providing a framework with the aim of describing a set of conditions to guide the evaluation of whether a drug serves as a gateway for another drug. We used data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health to demonstrate how using latent transition analysis we can estimate the odds of using a drug at a later time conditional on having used a gateway drug at an earlier time. We provide three empirical demonstrations for testing the gateway relations using a national and longitudinal data of adolescents (e.g., gateway relation between cigarettes and marijuana...

MELBOURNE, Australia, July 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- A new policy recommendation released on 20 July by the World Health Organization (WHO) warns against the use of serological (blood) tests to diagnose active tuberculosis (TB). Serological tests measure antibodies to TB in serum and are different to QuantiFERON, which measures responses of white blood cells to TB specific proteins.
Active tuberculosis occurs when the TB organism has overcome the body's immune defences and proliferates to cause clinical symptoms. According to WHO, TB takes one life every 17 seconds globally.(1) People with active disease often shed live TB bacteria and infect others. A person who is infected with the bacteria that causes TB, but who shows no symptoms and is not sick with the disease, is said to have late...

Multiple regression analysis assumes that one model or theory is relevant for the entire population , yet research has shown that this assumption is often false and may severely limit valid theory development and testing. Latent class regression analysis overcomes this limitation and allows the researcher to identify and develop regression models that are relevant for different segments within the same population. Latent class regression analysis is introduced and is used to analyze truck drivers' intentions to stay with the same firm. This article demonstrates the advantages of testing logistics theory with latent class regression analysis and provides numerous applications for practitioners.

One of the ideas to which Leo Strauss drew the attention of many readers in the last century is that of a difference between exoteric and esoteric philosophical writing. These terms can refer to different kinds of philosophical teaching, one kind intended for a general and the the other kind for a more restricted audience. Crosson comments on .
