YAKIMA, Wash. -- Yakima County's July unemployment rate was 8.7 percent, four-tenths of a percentage point above the 8.3 percent rate from July of last year.
This July, 210 more people were unemployed in the county, according to the state Employment Security Department.

Q: I lost my wife of 39 years last July to esophageal cancer. She was diagnosed with terminal cancer two years prior, and I then retired from my job as a New York City taxi driver of 20-plus years to care for her 24/7. Doctors and the nurses allowed me to spend the night in her hospital room. When she wasn't hospitalized, I spent every waking minute tending to her needs. The doctors and nurses we got to know told me my love for my wife kept her alive for over two years. However, many months after her passing I still feel that I didn't do enough. She was only 61 when she died and she'd lost both parents when she was only in her mid-30s. She'd always begged me to take care of her as her parents had always done, and I feel like I let her down.
