CHICAGO The burning building had been vacant for years, but the firefighters went in anyway just in case squatters started the blaze and were trapped inside. Then the heavy-timbered roof and a wall collapsed. Four firefighters were trapped under debris, and two of them died on a day that already was among the most somber on the Chicago Fire Departments calendar. Exactly 100 years ago, 21 Chicago firefighters died when a wall collapsed at the Union Stock Yards fire, one of the nations worst tragedies for firefighters before 9/ 11. We were ringing the bell and calling out the names, said retired fireman Bill Cosgrove, who was at a service honoring the anniversary. We heard a mayday on the radio that a wall had fallen in. Most of the firefighters at the service broke down in tears when t...

Having a smoke detector and maintaining working batteries for them is essential for any home. If a home doesn't have a smoke detector, they can visit their neighborhood fire station to get one. For the homes with smoke alarms, we stress the importance of checking the alarm to make sure it's working," CFD Media Director Larry Langford told the Defender.
"Most of the homes on the South and West Sides, where a great number of minorities reside, are older. Oftentimes if they haven't been updated, there's still one outlet in each room. When that's the case, extension cords are used and an overload can happen." said Langford.
"The 'grocery list' is vital because oftentimes someone that's on medication will need it within a few hours after the fire. They'll need to have a copy of their prescr...

On the Web site for Birmingham, Ala., Mayor Larry Langford promises to make the city the best of the "New South." But the Department of Justice says Mr. Langford's political ambition is geared more toward old-fashioned corruption.
The details released with a 101-count indictment Tuesday included all the hallmarks - the politician, the rich businessman and the lobbyist who helped grease the skids. Add a modern-day twist: a county government on the verge of the biggest municipal bankruptcy in history with $3.2 billion in debt.

The group spoke exclusively to the Defender about how Black firefighters are often passed over for promotions, wrongfully tenninated and isolated from their white counterparts. They allege that this type of treatment has gone on for years and they are now speaking out because "we cannot stand by and endure such unfair treatment any longer," said [Toni Stitch], 50, who is an 1 8-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department.
Basically you have them against us and it is more of them than it is of us," he told the Defender. "A department this critical to the city should not have to deal with so much internal tension among employees. This can be very distracting and when you have people depending on you to save their lives you cannot be distracted.
"I encourage Black firefighters to come fo...

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Mayor Larry Langford strode into a recent meeting with business leaders accompanied by two police officers carrying submachine guns. They looked ready for trouble.
The cops were props, though, meant to hype Langford's "top secret" finance plans for Birmingham, an old steel city-turned- medical hub that's trying to cope with population losses and a bad reputation for crime.
