Under the new deals, firms including The Whitman Companies Inc. of East Brunswick, Langan Engineering & Environmental Services of Elmwood Park and Millburn-based Hatch Mott MacDonald, will do jobs such as remove asbestos before demolition and cap contaminated soil on properties targeted for new schools. SDA funds and manages school construction in 31 low-income areas statewide, also known as Abbott districts. Ron Carper, assistant director of real estate and environmental services at Trenton-based SDA, says there were "economies of scale achieved by awarding the contract to a smaller number" of companies that specialize in environmental services.
Langan Engineering & Environmental Services Inc.'s purchase of a California engineering business will expand the Elmwood Park company's West Coast presence, add earthquake engineering services to its portfolio and help move it into Asian markets. It's one thing that Passaic County probation officers have had to live with water-soaked ceiling tiles and moldy, decaying walls in their offices. But, says union official Dan Bergin, what lurks behind those unsightly facades is even worse - oozing antifreeze, more mold and asbestos that can become airborne. The county says it is working on maintenance of the building and that recent tests found no friable, or airborne, asbestos. Bergin, local director of employee relations and northern region vice president of the Probation Association of New Jersey Local 116, isn't satisfied.
