Steven Okazaki's 'American Sons' responds to the inadequate cinematic portrayal of American Asian masculinity. Confrontational and uncompromising, the film features four composite characters who simply narrate their story as being interviewed. Okazaki's theatrical piece uses the documentary form to present a political issue dramatically. Kelvin Han Yee plays Mitchell, a Chinese American; Yuji Okumoto is James, a Korean adopted by a middle class, white couple; Ron Muriera is Danny, a Filipino; and Lane Nishikawa is Robert, a Japanese Sansei.

IT: The biggest breakthrough? That's really hard to say. The sad part of it is that America has a history of separating Asian-American men and women. The greatest breakthroughs for Asian-Americans in the media have all been for Asian-American women; they're much more easily accepted by the American public. The greatest breakthroughs would be like The Joy Luck Club, both the book and the movie, where it's all about Asian-American women, mothers and daughters, with white men and negative portrayals of Asian-American men.

The names of this year's five awardees garner slow, comprehensive nods from film people; though many of us may never have heard of them, we've probably enjoyed the fruits of their labors without realizing it. To celebrate their achievements, there'll be films from cinema icon LM Kit Carson (producer of Wes Anderson's and the Wilson brothers' breakout Bottle Rocket, actor in the 1967 mockumentary David Holzman's Diary, writer of such screenplays as The American Dreamer, with Dennis Hopper), the Texan dynamic duo of screenwriters Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana (Brokeback Mountain, The Last Picture Show), nervy Russian director Pavel Chukhray (The Thief, A Driver for Vera) and ethnomusicologist Robert Mugge, for over 30 years Mississippi's filmmaker in residence and documentarian of Ameri...
