  • WASHINGTON, May 31, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Land Trust of Tennessee, the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust and Wildlands Network received a Sustainable Forestry Initiative(R) (SFI(R)) conservation grant today in support of their work to help private landowners and government agencies in the southeastern United States protect special forest sites though working-forest conservation easements. The three non-profit conservation organizations were awarded a total of $65,000 over two years to work with hardwood forest owners, government agencies and SFI program participants to encourage owners to consider easements, and to offer advice and technical assistance.

  • The nonprofit group Park Friends was founded in 1992 to help maintain Overton Park and to oppose plans to pave several of its green spaces for parking. We have been advocates for protection of the park ever since. We have defeated several proposed developments and completed projects that include sprinklers for the formal gardens, signs for the Old Forest trail, ongoing maintenance and clean-ups. And now Park Friends has a modest proposal for city of Memphis officials: a conservation easement that would cover all the public green spaces of the park. Such a move would not only protect the irreplaceable old-growth forest but also prevent further paving and construction in the remainder of the park.

  • Twelve stories tall and as wide as a pickup truck, the Shumard oak reaches skyward like an immense pillar, culminating in a crown overlooking the city that literally grew up around it. If Tom Heineke is right, this tree and others in Overton Park's old-growth forest have been around since the Revolutionary War. They're testaments to what Heineke, a botanist and plant ecologist, calls the continuing richness and diversity of a forest that dates back to the last ice age.

  • Our citizens' support for the Memphis Zoo over the last 104 years has nurtured the zoo's growth into one of the finest zoological parks in the nation. Now, nearly a million people each year visit the zoo and are educated on the wonders of wildlife, all of which takes place in Overton Park - Memphis' premier urban park. A bill introduced recently in the Tennessee legislature, however, puts the future of the zoo and the park at potential risk. The Old Forest State Natural Area bill (SB 2415 and HB 2563) calls for nearly half of Overton Park to be placed under the direction of the Natural Areas Preservation Act of 1971. While supporters of this legislation claim that it would result in no changes in the current and intended uses of the park, the fine print and rules in the bill would restr...
