BEIJING (AP) -- Watermelons have been bursting by the score in eastern China after farmers gave them overdoses of growth chemicals during wet weather, creating what state media called fields of "land mines. About 20 farmers around Danyang city in Jiangsu province were affected, losing as much as 115 acres of melon, China Central Television said in an investigative report.
SEOUL, South Korea - Parts of North Korean land mines washed down a swollen river into South Korea, and troops searched for other mines that may have been dislodged by deadly landslides and flooding that has stricken the peninsula. Two wooden North Korean mine boxes were found in a river in Cheolwon on the South Korean side of the Demilitarized Zone. The boxes were empty, the detonators and explosives believed to have been lost in the current, a Defense Ministry official said Friday.
SERHANIYEH, Lebanon - Syria has planted land mines along parts of its border with Lebanon, further sealing itself off from the world and showing just how deeply shaken Bashar Assad's regime has become since an uprising began nearly eight months ago. Although Assad's hold on power is firm, the 46-year-old eye doctor is taking increasingly desperate measures to safeguard his grip on the country of 22 million people at the heart of the Arab world. A Syrian official confirmed to The Associated Press that troops were laying the mines, saying they were aimed at stopping weapons smuggling into the country during the uprising.
When Herbert R. Falk reflects back on the early morning of Feb. 6, 1945, he still can't grasp what came over him to commit a sudden act of gallantry. He was assigned to a unit that specialized in removing land mines and was walking under the cover of woods with members of the infantry toward the German town of Schmidt when U.S. tanks, which didn't have the same benefit of wooded camouflage, came to a halt on a narrow road running parallel to the forest.
There's an old saying in Washington that, "If you are arguing about procedure, you are losing. I was first introduced to it when I arrived in our nation's capital last year, and there is definitely more than a hint of truth to it.
On Jan. 13, the Washington Post carried an unusual op-ed co- written by the least popular Republican presidential candidate and the junior Senator from West Virginia. The two men proposed that a "no [party affiliation] label" group of problem solving congresspeople work together in a pragmatic fashion to overcome gridlock. This much-to-be-desired idea faces huge challenges and a potentially derailing minefield. Here are some examples of possible outcomes and a few of the "mines" that might explode under these brave "no label" pragmatists.
The usual suspects in there are the people that are involved, the processes that are used and the technologies that allow you to leverage your people and your processes. [...] the third is future challenges and opportunities - things like barriers to your success, resources that are going to be needed, what type of culture changes need to happen in order to promote success. [...] we had a session where we told all leaders we needed to have on our doors, if not in our language, to 'Bring me the bad news.'
President Obama departs late Wednesday on his first official trip to Asia, capping weeks of work by his foreign policy team to head off the sorts of embarrassments that could make the difference between a positive outreach mission and a diplomatic dud. At his first stop in Japan, U.S. officials have worked to forestall a thorny debate over American military bases. In Southeast Asia, they have tried to dampen expectations for the first-ever interaction between an American president and the brutal military ruler in Myanmar. In South Korea, discussion of Seoul's refusal to import American cars will take a back seat to expressing gratitude for South Korean contributions to the war in Afghanistan.
Are you two ever going to get married?" and its companion, "When are you two going to make me a grandma (or grandpa)? Back off, already! If the couple wanted you to know their intimate intentions, they would be sure to send you a memo.
