There's something about a royal romance that makes hearts flutter and mouths gape. As the wedding of Britain's Prince William and Kate Middleton draws closer, we look other great royal romances.
Antony and Cleopatra: She was the Ptolemaic Queen of Egypt and he was Marcus Antonius, a Roman general who served under Julius Caesar. They met when Antony journeyed to Egypt to enlist the queen's support during his military campaigns. He granted land to Cleopatra and her family, and rumors spread in Rome that the fierce and cunning war hero had fallen under Cleo's spell. The two committed suicide after Antony was routed by the forces of his Roman rival, Octavian. It's telling that Antony is remembered chiefly for his ill- starred romance with Cleopatra, rather than for his military and politica...

EARLY JEWISH/ARAB HISTORY Many historians and religious scholars believe the conflict between Arabs and Jews dates back thousands of years ago to the time of Abraham and his two sons, Ishmael and Isaac, who are the forefathers of the Arab and Jewish people, respectively.5 God promised the land encompassing Palestine (which includes modem-day Israel) to the sons of Abraham, thus giving the descendents of both sons an ancient claim to the land of Palestine.7 The Jews began to settle in the land of Israel around 1300 B.C.E., and controlled the area for several hundred years until other nations conquered their lands.8 There were short periods where Jews controlled portions of modem-day Israel, but in 135 CE., the Jews were completely dispersed from their ancient homeland.9 Arabs gradually c...

Hurricane [Katrina]'s $23 billion [insurance] hit has triggered a full-blown debate about the federal program that insures property in flood-prone areas," author Neil Peirce wrote recently in Stateline.org. "Critics are charging the program's rates are so cheap and its loopholes so broad that it actually puts pressure on local governments to permit new development in extraordinarily flood-prone areas-territory that should never be built on in the first place.
As scientific data mounts, smarter people are taking a harder, deeper look. Before World War I, most foreign investment in Latin America came from Britain. By World War II, however, the United States had become the main and unchallenged foreign investor in the region. This analysis of the negotiations that took place between the British firm (Pearson and Son) and the Colombian government over oil contracts reveals the reasons for the shift in influence. The company's lack of awareness that Britain had been overtaken by the United States as the hegemonic power in the hemisphere eventually caused the negotiations to collapse. While talks were proceeding, the company failed to consider how much influence the United States had on Colombian internal politics, and it overlooked the history of U.S.-Colombia relations. As a result, Pearson never received oil concession...
