LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK, Kenya - The famous flamingos of Nakuru are fading away.
The spindly, exquisite birds, clouds of pink rising on a million wings in generations of tourist photographs, are dying, flying off, fleeing a seemingly fatal brew of environmental threats in a shrinking Lake Nakuru, the home that has sheltered them for uncounted centuries.

The adventure departs from Los Angeles and begins with a day in Nairobi with a visit to the AFEW (African Fund for Endangered Wildlife) Nature Center, which helps educate young African children about wildlife conservation, where guests may hand-feed the Rothschild giraffe that live here, followed by a stop at the former house of Karen Blixen (1885-1962) author of Out of Africa. Guests then travel north to the Samburu Reserve at the edge of Kenya and spend two days at luxury accommodations surrounded by wildlife such as zebra, giraffe, and Beisa oryx, all found only north of the equator, as well as elephants and extensive birdlife.
Three days follow in the Maasai Mara and Northern Serengeti, Kenya's most famous wildlife reserve, classic savannah grasslands where animals are plentiful and...

In Kenya, an 'Out of Africa' experience
If you love wildlife, an African safari in Kenya is a must! We were in the Masai Mara reserve last August, as were millions of wildebeest and zebras for their annual migration. We saw too many species of animals to name them all, but among the favorites were the lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, elephants, gazelle, impala, flamingos at Lake Nakuru and hippos at Lake Naivasha. We also went to the home of Karen von Blixen-Finecke, where this picture was taken. She was a coffee farmer and author of "Out of Africa." The house was actually used for exterior scenes in the movie.

There are a few students at the Ngala School for the Deaf in Nakuru, Kenya, who, three months out of the year, live in a slum known as Bondeni -- described by one Utahn as wall-to-wall people living in mud huts with tin roofs and piles of garbage in the streets.
I've never seen anything like it in my life," said Sue Vanderhoof. "It was very depressing.

My husband, Tim, and I are avid travelers and adventurers, so when our friend, Betty Levin, phoned and invited us on an invitation- only wildlife safari to Kenya and Tanzania in Eastern Africa, we jumped at the chance.
Levin is a tour guide with Smartours. We had been on one trip with her and her company to Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti last year, so we knew we would be in good hands.
