Cholera deaths top 1,500 in Nigeria
LAGOS, Nigeria - More than 1,500 people have died in Nigeria from a cholera outbreak this year, international health officials said Monday, more than double the last estimates provided by federal officials.

LAGOS, Nigeria -- More than a quarter of people in sub-Saharan Africa worry about future conflict along religious lines, though concerns in Rwanda and Nigeria are even higher, according to a new survey on religious attitudes released Thursday.
The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, which conducted the survey, however, found that unemployment, crime and corruption are of greater concern to Africans than future religious conflict.

LAGOS, Nigeria - More than 160 poor villagers from Nigeria's north died from lead poisoning while trying to leach gold from rock deposits, sparking evacuations as health officials try to come to grips with a crisis six months in the making, authorities said Friday.
Dr. Henry Akpan, Nigeria's chief epidemiologist, told The Associated Press that 100 of the dead were children from five villages in Zamfara state, a near-desert region of the Sahel that has seen a growing food crisis over recent weeks. Akpan said the children either played near the leaching process or took part in it, swallowing the lead by putting their hands in their mouths or breathing it in.

LAGOS, Nigeria Militants threatened more attacks on Nigeria's oil centers and vowed Sunday to cut daily oil exports by 1 million barrels, adding to concerns for OPEC as it prepares for a strategy meeting this week.
Oil is already more than $60 a barrel, and the markets are nervous about potential disruptions to the supply from this OPEC member, Africa's largest producer of crude oil.

SANTIAGO, Chile -- Authorities evacuated hundreds of people from villages in southern Chile Friday after a snow-capped volcano considered to have been dormant for thousands of years erupted. The blast sent minor earthquakes rippling through the region.
The 3,550-foot Chaiten volcano belched fire and ash Thursday night, causing more than 60 small tremors in the Los Lagos region, 750 miles south of the capital, Santiago, the government's Emergency Bureau said.
