The most acute phase of the global economic crisis appears to have passed. Output growth has resumed in most parts of the world. It appears, however, that the upturn in advanced economies will only be moderate and that the economies of many countries will be marked by considerable spare output capacity and high unemployment ahead. The crisis has given rise to new imbalances that will dampen the recovery. Weak prospects have contributed to a marked decline in interest rate expectations in many countries. New information suggests that the recovery in the Norwegian economy is continuing, but that capacity utilization is probably somewhat lower than anticipated in autumn 2009. Monetary policy cannot fine-tune developments in the economy, but it can mitigate the most severe effects when the ...

In recent estimates, the International Labour Organization (ILO) found that approximately 217.7 million children ages five to seventeen are engaged in labor around the world. Within Asia and the Pacific alone, 122.3 million children between five and fourteen are economically active. Child labor has not escaped the attention of policymakers around the globe. Within India itself, the Bonded Labour System Act abolished all forms of bonded labor in 1976. The practice of bonded labor was methodically defined, taking into consideration multiple forms of agreements binding a debtor in service to a creditor. Progress toward eliminating child labor continues to be made on a global scale. A 2006 report by the ILO noted that the total number of child laborers worldwide fell 11% over the last four ...

With its profusion of languages, ethnic groups and regional diversities, with its unique caste system, with its contrast between information technology and industry billionaires and the nearly 300 million people who live below the poverty line, with its mixture of Mahatma Gandhi's nonviolent philosophy and outbreaks of savage communal violence, and with its success as a parliamentary democracy despite having 400 million people who cannot read or write, India remains a bewilderingly complex country. A powerful moral leader as well as a wily politician, Gandhi wanted Indians to be proud of their past, to wear Indian rather than foreign dress, to challenge their colonial overlords through peaceful protest and noncooperation and not through violence, and to eliminate discrimination against...

Consumer price inflation remains moderate even though the cyclical upturn in the Norwegian economy is in a mature phase. Underlying inflation has been fairly stable and ranged between 1% and 1 1/2% over a longer period. Growth in the Norwegian economy has been strong. High income growth and high income expectations, combined with low interest rates, have led to brisk growth in demand in the business, household and public sectors. So far, there are few signs of a slowdown in the Norwegian economy. There are prospects that the strong expansion will be sustained for a longer period than previously envisaged. The growth outlook for the world economy remains favorable. Monetary policy cannot fine-tune developments in the economy, but must counter the effects of large disturbances to the econ...

Mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are increasingly becoming a strategy of choice for companies attempting to achieve and sustain competitive advantage. However, not all M&As are a success. In this paper, we examine the three main reasons highlighted in the literature as major causes of M&A failure (clashing corporate cultures, absence of clear communication, and employee involvement) in three Indian pharmaceutical companies, and we analyze the role played by the HR function in addressing them. Also, we discuss the importance of gaining the commitment and focus of the workforce during the acquisition process through employee involvement.

Inflation has been slightly higher than projected. Measured by the consumer price index (CPI), inflation is now higher than 3%. A strong rise in prices for electricity and petrol has pushed up CPI inflation since autumn 2007. Inflation has increased in many countries. Oil and gas prices have risen further through spring. Capacity utilization in Norway is high. An ample supply of labor, strong productivity growth and considerable terms of trade gains through several years have boosted the growth potential of the Norwegian economy. Growth in the Norwegian economy seems to have slowed as expected in 2008 Q1. Enterprises in Norges Bank's regional network report high capacity utilization but moderating growth in most of the industries. Monetary policy in Norway is oriented towards annual con...

As Vietnam emerges into world markets, Vietnamese organizations are facing the predicament of how to avoid the low-cost labor trap and move up the production value-chain by improving quality and productivity. Continuous improvement (CI) practices have proved fundamental to building and sustaining competitive advantage in other Asian countries such as Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia. If Vietnamese organizations are to pursue higher value-added activities, CI will be critical for them, too. Despite the tremendous interest in Vietnam from the international business community, little research on Vietnamese management practices has been done, particularly on the use of CI techniques. The language barrier, lack of reliable business data, and the culture of government and corporate secrecy in V...

In this article we present ethnographic evidence from China and the UK to show that the state's migration discourse is not simply a dominant force imposed externally by the state on migrants, but is itself shaped by migrant strategies. These strategies lead to migratory, employment and survival practices that in turn produce the social phenomena (bogus asylum seeking, an informal labour market, illegal border crossing) that originally informed and justified the discourse itself. Furthermore, and as a final irony, some of the very discursive categories themselves are not simply externally imposed on migrants. In this article we will show how for instance 'legality', 'skills', or 'qualifications' are not intrinsic qualities that migrants do or do not possess, but bureaucratic statuses man...
