HARRISBURG, Pa., Nov. 24, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Game Commission officials, joined by veterinarians and laboratory technicians from the Pennsylvania and U.S. departments of Agriculture, will continue its efforts, starting Nov. 30, to sample thousands of hunter-killed deer in order to assess whether there are any known cases of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in the Commonwealth.
For nearly a decade, we have tested hunter-killed deer, and have not found, confirmed or suspected any cases of CWD-infected deer in Pennsylvania," said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director. "We are planning to collect samples from 4,000 hunter-killed deer to test for CWD in the upcoming firearms deer season. WE'RE going to run a few tests." It's a phrase that fills us with dread. But, what if your doctor couldn't run a few tests? Most medical decisions depend to some degree on laboratory data. I'm a clinical pathologist; an M.D. who runs medical laboratories.
Pathologists, together with lab directors with doctorates, phlebotomists, medical technologists, medical laboratory technicians and a variety of others, provide reliable laboratory testing. The medical laboratory is like the sound crew for a rock concert -- we're pretty much invisible, but it doesn't work without us.

Depending on the region, medical facilities nationwide are struggling with shortages of physicians and specialists ranging from physical therapists to laboratory technicians - and people working within other business sectors are taking notice. With members of the massive Baby Boom generation entering their senior years, openings for nurses, physical therapists, medical assistants, health-information technicians, and physician assistants in particular are expected to multiply over the next seven years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Like nursing, respiratory therapy offers a range of work schedules and settings - from hospitals to nursing homes to home care - that can help families balance work and home life, Bresnahan said.

The other major factor in the outsourcing boom is saving money. In some instances, the dentist chooses to have the crown fabricated in a foreign lab to cut cost (the average Chinese-made crown costs about 20 percent less than the average US made crown). In most instances however, the dentist is unaware the crown will not be fabricated domestically. There are no laws in place that requires a lab to tell a dentist prior to fabrication whether the crown will be outsourced. A lab is only required to notify the clinician at the time of delivery and that can be as simple as a sticker on the container that says "Manufactured for" or "Distributed by" followed by the name of the lab contracting with the dentist.
