On June 26, the Sun Journal published a guest column by John McGough regarding the contract negotiations between the state of Maine and workers who are represented by the Maine State Employees Association. Several of his points were laughable at best and totally misleading.
Yes, the MSEA did offer a status quo on the contract; raise freeze and merit pay freeze included. They did not and have not requested raises of any kind as they are aware of the financial situation the state is in.

Outcome Critical to Postal Service, Employees, Future
WASHINGTON, Dec. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Postal Service and two of its major unions have agreed to continue to extend separate labor contract negotiations. Although the contracts with the National Association of Letter Carriers, AFL-CIO (NALC) and the National Postal Mail Handlers Union, AFL-CIO (NPMHU) expired at midnight Sunday, Nov. 20, the Postal Service and the two unions agreed to extend the negotiations deadline until midnight, Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011. All parties have now agreed to continue negotiations until midnight, Friday, December 16.

The Service Employees International Union Healthcare PA said Tuesday it union will conduct informational picketing at four Grane Healthcare nursing homes in the region to publicize stalled labor contract negotiations.
The union's contract expired April 1, but the 300 workers at the homes have remained on the job under contract extensions. Picketing will be conducted on Wednesday at Grane's Beaver Falls home; at LaurelWoods in Johnstown on Thursday; at Harmon House in Mt. Pleasant on Monday; and at Harmar Village in Cheswick on May 19.

Contracts with the National Association of Letter Carriers, AFL-CIO (NALC) and the National Postal Mail Handlers Union, AFL-CIO (NPMHU) expired at midnight Sun., Nov. 20, 2011. The extension will allow the parties to continue to work on the important economic, health care, workplace and other contractual issues being discussed.

In a 2-1 decision Friday, the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said a federal court cannot prevent the league from locking out its employees in a labor dispute. The players had filed an antitrust suit against the league after contract negotiations fell apart.
