Game cameras are the rage among deer hunters these days, so it's no surprise that Moultrie has come out with a new one in time for the upcoming deer seasons. It's called the Game Spy M-100 Mini Game Camera. Smaller than your hand, the Realtree camouflage trail camera features Moultrie's new Illumi-Night Sensor, which the company claims "provides the brightest and clearest nighttime infrared pictures." It also offers widescreen images and videos in 16:9 format to provide a wider field of view than standard game cameras. Users can choose between three operational modes: infrared triggered game camera; time-lapse plot camera; or plot camera by day, infrared camera at night. The time-lapse mode can take up to 3,600 images in one day, but the user can sort through them in mi...

In a famous call-and-response blues tune, Blind Willie Johnson asks, "Well, who's that writin'?" And the answer is his song's title, along with that of Irish music journalist Peter Murphy's contemporary first-person coming-of-age novel.
John the Revelator" is John of Patmos, the putative author of the Bible's Book of Revelations, among Western culture's most enigmatic and apocalyptic texts. Johnson's 1930 song was covered by later artists as disparate as Depeche Mode, the Blues Brothers, and Beck, just as images and language of Revelations are laced through numerous works of art. "John the Revelator" itself feels like a cover song, a stroll over familiar literary territory. Nevertheless, the novel is entertaining and a solid addition to the library shelf admittedly groaning under comin...

After a terrble earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 devastated Haiti last week, thereby creating the worst crisis there in 200 years, our brothers and sisters again demystified the "neg rayi neg" saying. As soon as they could steady their legs, Haitians dove into relief mode, digging under concrete with their bare hands. They used their nails as claws. The images on CNN, ABC and most of the major networks showed a consistent pattern: Regular men, women and children, most often complete strangers, were doing their best to save lives. They often put themselves at risk, crawling and squeezing into airless crevices to pull out a baby, a mother, a student, a father.
I refuse to dignify Rush Limbaugh's remarks that "Haitians made a pact with Satan" with an answer. One only needs to look at the...

[Doug DuBois], who has extensively documented his grandmother's struggle with illness, has surrounded us with immediate, nearly tactile scenes of her last moments. These are displayed as three wall-sized projections at Pittsburgh Filmmaker's Melwood Gallery. Yet it's not DuBois' imagery that most helps us experience her existence and subsequent death; it's his soundtrack.
If during a vigil one is asked to not simply observe but to remember, DuBois suggests that the images here might not suffice. DuBois seemingly uses a visual mode of communication to demonstrate the limits of visual communication. As we stand in the center of DuBois' video installation, surrounded by his grandmother's moaning breaths emitted through three different speakers, we must dart our eyes to keep track of the th...

Despite the perception in some quarters that cartoons constitute an important medium for framing social issues, they are often dismissed on the grounds of political absurdity and ideological insignificance. Cartoons are seen as offering just "passing chuckles" rather than any "deep reflection" on social issues. The perception may be related to the cartoon's discursive spatial limitation and its very nature as a visual mode of communication. Visual modes of communication are deemed deficient in performing analytical communication. By grounding cartoons within a theory of visual semiotics and visual persuasion, this paper attempts to address some of the concerns raised about the effectiveness of editorial cartoons. It attempts to find out how cartoons, as uniquely visual forms of communic...

Innovation strategy helps a company in three ways: exciting its customers, outperforming competitors, and building a new product portfolio. The literature describes many frameworks for innovation strategy but offers little detail about how to implement them. This paper identifies 12 ways of visualizing innovation strategies: platform offering, co-creation, cycle time reduction, brand value enhancement, technology leveraging, future-proofing, lean development, partnering, innovation mutation, creative destruction, market segmentation, and acquisition. These strategies allow 100 leading global companies to dominate their markets and outperform the competition through innovation.
