There was a time when a 6-foot-2, 190-pound Chris Zovinka stood proudly as a member of the prestigious Presidential Honor Guard during the Korean War Veterans Memorial dedication ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Regarding the letter "soldiers' names sacred" (BDN, Oct. 9) about gold star mothers: I am one of them, an organization that no woman wants to belong to. I do not pretend to speak for any gold star mom, but please hear me out.
I walked a short time ago, through Mt. Hope Cemetery, to view many names written on a memorial to the Korean War. In Washington, D.C. we have a wall of names dedicated to the dead from another war, Vietnam. In many other places throughout this nation, we honor our war dead. Please believe me when I say the flags that some find so offensive, that flew at the Peace Rally with the names of the brave men and women that have lost their lives in Iraq, flew to honor them.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Korean War Veterans Memorial had the greatest emotional impact on me when I recently visited three war monuments on the Washington Mall. To the west of the Washington Monument and close to the Lincoln Memorial, the three monuments honor the sacrifices of three generations of American soldiers in three wars: World War II, in which 400,000 died; the Vietnam War, in which 58,245 died; and the Korean War, in which 50,000 died.
The Korean War from 1950 to 1953 is the conflict my high school classmates served in; some died, and several of my friends were never quite the same again. At least two had post-traumatic stress disorder, a diagnosis that was not officially made until sometime after the Vietnam War. The sadly thoughtful homecoming of my classmates and friends wa...

Longtime phone company employee Donald K. Dahlberg was a Korean War veteran and a history buff. "We took him to Washington, D.C., a couple of years ago to see the Korean War memorial," said a daughter, Diane Worrest of North Haven. "While we were there, we presented him with a Korean War veteran's medal that we had sent away for.
An avid reader of history, Dahlberg used to enjoy taking his family camping to places with strong historical connections, like Valley Forge, Manassas and Bull Run. He passed on this love to all of his children, according to his daughter.

Fifty-eight years ago on July 27, 1953, the Korean War officially ended. Before it was over the United Nations forces suffered 995,601 casualties, killed, wounded and missing. U.S. forces lost 29,550 killed and 106,978 missing and wounded. No one knows the number of Korean civilian men, women and children that were killed and wounded, or the Chinese and North Korean troops who were killed or missing, but it was probably in the several hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions.
It almost seemed that no one knew a war was on unless you knew someone who had been there, or you were there yourself. Remember, this was before the daily 5 o'clock TV news and instant CNN communication.
...It also seemed that the Korean War Memorial in Washington, D.C., was built as an afterthought ...
