Russell Pearce is no Benjamin Franklin, except they share one of our most repellent and recurring prejudices -- xenophobia, fear of foreigners. Throughout our history, Americans have been profoundly ambivalent on the subject of immigration. We get misty-eyed seeing the Statue of Liberty, or hearing about our own foreign-born ancestors, and then periodically erupt in spasms of nativist nonsense. The country is going through one of those spasms right now. Witness the measure passed in Arizona that requires law-enforcement officers to question anyone they "reasonably suspect" of being illegal. Sponsors say that would not lead to racial profiling, but their denials ring hollow. Of course it would.

Today I'm really happy I am not from Mexico. That is not to say anything bad about Mexicans or Mexican Americans. In fact, it is nice not to be from anywhere south of the Rio Grande. It was gut-wrenching when the immigrants took over the land of the Delawares, the Cherokee, and the Seminoles. Other than Massasoit's welcome of the Pilgrims, Native American greeting was less than cordial at times. Who could blame them? Foreigners arrived on their shore wearing funny-looking costumes, they had weapons that ...

NEW YORK - As the most powerful man in the universe, or one of them anyway, Roger Ailes can look back on the first 15 years of his crowning achievement, Fox News Channel, with satisfaction. And he does. It was way back in February 1996 that, at the behest of News Corp. chieftain Rupert Murdoch, Ailes began creating from scratch an all-news network to challenge the venerable CNN as well as upstart MSNBC, which was set to launch that July.
