Even with the rich literature on knowledge management, we still don't know enough about how the rate of change in production-know-how affects the choice of mechanisms for its transfer. Codifying tacit know-how helps, but codification becomes more challenging as the know-how changes more frequently. Transfer of tacit know-how becomes much more complicated when it changes often. We need more research in this area, particularly to help production and operations managers who must ultimately use the new know-how and change their companies' production processes. The literature suggests that transferring knowledge may lead to a competitive advantage, synergistic cost advantages, and better implementation of organizational strategies, but there is little empirical evidence to guide organizations in managing the knowledge transfer process. This research explores how organizations use communication media to transfer or share knowledge. Building upon media richness theory (Daft and Lengel, 1986), we hypothesize that rich media would be used more often to transfer know-how or tacit knowledge, and lean media would be used more often to transfer information or explicit knowledge. NEW VIENNA, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is calling a Tuesday morning fish kill in Delaware County "relatively small," with a small amount of water affected and a low number of fish killed. Fisheries biologist Dan Kirby said between 2,000 and 5,000 gallons of liquid hog manure leaked on the farm of Dan Goedken in rural New Vienna around 8 a.m. Tuesday when a valve was accidentally left open on a manure transfer pump. Kirby did not know how much of the manure reached Bear Creek, but it contaminated about nine- tenths of a mile of the creek. About 2,500 fish spanning nine species were killed.

Germany's Fraunhofer Gesselschaft, Europe's largest center for applied research, has opened a new office in Moscow in an effort to promote technology transfer and expand strategic partnerships in the world's largest country. The Moscow office opening comes just months after the German and Russian governments agreed in early 2005 to increase cooperation in the areas of research and education.
