  • Dear Santa, I know it's late. I know you're weary. I know your plans don't include me. I also know how annoying it is when people quote Bob Seger lyrics, so I'll stop right there.

  • Grammy award winner Alicia Keys has followed her critically acclaimed, "As I Am" album with an extravagant follow up "The Element of Freedom." The album opens with a hypnotizing yet eerie beat that will easily stick to the minds of listeners as Keys gives her testimony through a song setting an unpredictable tone while simultaneously defining the song title "Love is Blind." If that isn't touching "Try sleeping with a broken heart" will have definitely dear one's consciousness on what it means to be in love, lose it and feel like the world before you is tore apart. Keys is talented because, like most artist, we don't know how sincere the lyrics are, but we do know she has a way of delivering them that makes us feel like she's been there and knows exactly how we feel. Never one to stunt h...

  • The initial reaction of the students, once told of the project, was "I do not know how to write lyrics for a rap song," according to Monroe and Cros. But as time progressed stated Cros, "I noticed that the kids wrote a lot quicker than in the initial first weeks, that at times it was overwhelming trying to keep up with every song they were writing. This gives the kids a mind set that they can do whatever they set their minds to," said Cros "It helps them to write about things that have meant something to them."

  • Surprisingly, [Jason A. Michael] said he met resistance from dozens of mainstream and some not-so-mainstream publishers when trying to sell the book. Publishing executives felt that [Phyllis Hyman] was not an R&B icon like Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles and others. Her name Was not that "recognizable" and she was never a "big star" were common comments. Michael finally opted to self-publish the book and received complete cooperation from the family and friends of Hyman. The book was released in September. Perhaps the greatest draw of "Strength of a Woman" is the music. Throughout the book, references to all of Hyman's greatest and most popular songs are repeated again and again. The melodies and lyrics to songs like "You Know How to Love Me," "Old Friend," "When I Give My Love This Time,"...

  • Currently, [Janice Burnett] and [Sandra Booker] are completing the required state application for Gilead House to become a licensed adult foster care (AFC) home. AFC is a program for adults who cannot live alone safely and who move into the homes of host families to provide daily care. When Gilead House is licensed and operational, its creators hope it will be a model residence for terminally ill hospice patients who wonder, "Where can I go? Who will care for me? To reach their goal, Janice and Sandra, along with their board of directors, are raising dollars to renovate the Gilead House's physical structure. Ramps will be installed and bathrooms will be remodeled to exceed state requirements. They are also looking for volunteers who will help with home modifications, repairs, and inter...

  • How well do you know your rock 'n' roll lyrics? Between the muddled

  • In the beginning Ted Neeley said he feels as though he acts as a sort of godfather to the group, passing on his wisdom and experience in "Jesus Christ Superstar." "It was so interesting to observe the cast during our first rehearsals," Neeley said. "They all were so amazingly polite and called me 'Sir' or 'Mr. Neeley.' It's so precious. The gentleman playing Herod was petrified our first few rehearsals. I asked him if there was anything I could do to help him, and he told me, 'Yes. You can stop being you!' "But, all the way down the line, I'm the lucky one to get to work with such amazing talent and am honored to get to be a part of this legacy once again. Everyone is so sweet and lovely and is a pleasure to work with. They're all absolutely magnificent and bring so many different eleme...

  • In Annuals, [Adam Baker], 22, harnesses the sextet's sound into a fury of colors, pushing up his elliptical lyrics and big, complex melodies with keyboards, noise and guitars. In Sunfold, which was called Sedona when the band attended high school in Raleigh, Florence, 21, allows '90s altrock influences to shine through in neat, well-arranged patterns. But the pair has grown up learning and loving many of the same records. We sat down with them in Florence's Raleigh home, near a shelf of books about musicians from Cokrane to The Beatles, to get their takes on some classics (and some that aren't quite there yet). AB: When I was younger, I thought [BECK] was a freak. I didn't really like him until I heard Midnite Vultures. I didn't know any better. I love how completely random all of Beck'...

  • PLACIDO DOMINGO, ADRIANA DAMATO, ALBERTO VERONESI Puccini: Edgar (Deutsche Grammophon) This 2005 recording of the 1892 three-act edition of Puccini's second opera, which he revised from the original four-acter that premiered in 1889, has a lot going for it. Pl cido Domingo sings the eponymous hero with brio and affection, the good cast and orchestra are stoutly conducted by Alberto Veronesi, and there is enough foundation and corporate support listed in the booklet -- presumably due to Domingo's participation - - to float a cargo tanker. But even Homer could nod when young, and the care and time poured into this disc only point out why Edgar has never gotten even half of a repertoire toehold. Despite some nice vocal moments and a potentially viable story, it's a big, ill-paced bore. The...

  • For me, happiness happens when my whole body is in joyful movement. As far as Fm concerned, moving and improvising to Ella and Louis singing "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" or Diana Krall crooning, "Gee baby, Ain't I Good to You," is as much fun as you can possibly have with your clothes on. I cut my teeth on those songs, I know all the lyrics and have known how to dance to that music since I was small. It's easy. All you have to do is learn the basic moves and then you are free to improvise to the music with a partner. For those who want to learn, Richard and Meg Maltz host lessons at Odd Fellows Hall on the first Saturday of every month. It's not free, but it's cheap and the proceeds support music in the public schools. Blues Dance Fridays at Studio East has become my favorite place ...
