  • Michael Pryor took a deep breath before his eighth-grade classmates Tuesday at Brooklyn Park Middle School and launched into his story of how he got into a fight with his father after his father didn't believe him when he said he didn't know how his sister's calculator became lost. Having been given creative license by storyteller Arianna Ross in preparation for her workshop, what started out as an argument became a little shocking. • New rules made by Gov. Charlie Crist and the majority of the Board of Executive Clemency in early April now speed up that process of clemency. The rules promise non-violent offenders who have completed their sentence will have their rights automatically restored. But some argue the rules don't do enough to help felons get back the right to vote, serve on a jury, seek elected office, and be considered for certain types of employment licenses. I'm stuck doing odd jobs because I can't get my license," [Carlton Dawson] said. "I don't know how long it will be, but it is really hindering me.

  • If you've ever found it difficult to get a drink at a crowded bar then you know how it feels to be a small business trying to get a liquor license in New York. A severe backlog in the liquor license review process has been hindering small businesses from maximizing their profits, due to an inability to sell alcohol. A new pilot program created by Senator Craig Johnson, D-Port Washington, hopes to circumvent the stalled State Liquor Authority process, however.

  • Journalists know well the value of good editing. They also know how bad editing can mangle what was intended. The state's constitution gives Wisconsin's governors license to be bad editors. It, in fact, empowers them to undermine the separation of powers spelled out so well in other parts of the constitution.
