Mayor Bloomberg on Tuesday, announced the first direct flights between the United States and Ireland West Airport Knock in County Mayo, Ireland. Beginning on May 27, three weekly flights operated by the low-cost airline Flyglobespan will run between John F. Kennedy Airport in Queens and Ireland West Knock, opening access to the western counties of Ireland and helping to boost Irish tourism in New York City. The announcement comes as a result of Mayor Bloomberg's last visit to Ireland in August, when he promised to lobby the Federal government to approve flights between Ireland West Knock and the United States. I had to respond to the recent letter titled "Our airport is an embarrassment" (Aug. 4). I agree that Augusta Regional Airport needs to be updated, but exactly where does Mr. Maner think the money should come from to provide this "state-of-the-art" facility? If, as suggested, we all go to other cities for our air travel, then we will never have the revenue or interest in Augusta Regional to make upgrades. The writer's suggestion would defeat the entire purpose of his tirade.

Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport continued its record pace, setting an all-time high for June with 2.13 million passengers.
