  • STROKE VICTIM THE KINKS' DAVIES PERFORMS Former Kinks guitarist Dave Davies, 64, who was severely debilitated after suffering a major stroke in June 2004, performed a full 90-minute concert for the first time since then, according to a post on the Kink's fan page, KPS Digest. Posts from other attendees at the event at the Hindu-themed website, Satsang-pilgrim, verified this. Davies and his longtime Los Angeles-based post-Kinks band performed full sets on successive nights at a Hindu-based retreat. A concert attendee said Davies was a bit rusty the first night, "and humbly asked permission to start a couple songs again but made up for it 3- fold the next night ripping into the songs without a moment's hesitation and without missing a beat.

The stream of writers, artists and musicians fleeing Europe at the start of World War II had turned into a flood, and many of those who arrived in America made their way to 7 Middagh Street, a three-storey, Tudor-style townhouse overlooking the New York harbor that had been transformed into an artists colony and refugee way station by eccentric litterateur George Davis. The newly minted expatriates came to commune with their American counterparts who, coaxed across the East River from Manhattan, must have felt like foreigners themselves.
