The introduction of the euro in 1999 has led to many initiatives and inquiries in other regions regarding the merits and prospects of currency unions. About 40 small island states and territories, which have mushroomed all over the world's oceans, are being plagued by woes resulting from overfishing, development, tourism, pollution and other ecological concerns. Nuclear testing and natural disasters are also problems that they have to contend with. However, through the Alliance of Small Island States and other regional organizations, the island states have taken the initial step toward looking after their own interests first.
