KABUL, Afghanistan - A U.S. soldier and a former Afghan militia leader were killed Sunday when American troops clashed with gunmen during a search operation in western Afghanistan, U.S. and Afghan officials said.

SAN DIMAS - On the night of June 9, 1995, a Pasadena Police Department helicopter, which had earlier handled aerial surveillance during a L.A. Impact operation, went airborne again to search for the gunmen who'd killed Louis Pompei.
Sheriff's deputies went to Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina, where a security guard pointed out a car that had just come in with men supposedly wounded in a drive-by shooting.

The troops came under attack from "an unknown number of enemy forces" while searching a compound near Shindand Airfield in Herat province and returned fire, a U.S. military statement said.

KABUL - NATO and Afghan forces killed several insurgents, including an armed woman, in a search operation in western Afghanistan on Saturday, the alliance said.
The governor of Shindand district in Herat, where the operation took place, said three civilians were killed and three children were wounded when insurgents used a civilian house for cover during the fighting.
