LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville coach Rick Pitino thought it looked like roller derby. Kentucky center Josh Harrellson kept waiting for another fight to break out. Coach John Calipari sensed a maliciousness that bordered on unseemly. Whatever happened during Kentucky's bruising 71-62 win over the rival Cardinals a year ago, it wasn't basketball. At least, not the kind fans pride themselves on in the Bluegrass.
LEXINGTON, Ky. - John Calipari agreed Tuesday to leave Memphis and the dominant program he built and take on the challenge - and riches - of returning Kentucky to college basketball glory. Calipari will receive an eight-year, $31.65 million deal plus incentives, according to the university, making him the highest- paid coach in college basketball. The school also will pay Memphis a $200,000 buyout.
Gather together and sing Kumbaya. Get a better appreciation for each other as people and players. Maybe gain a few basketball insights. Coach John Calipari spoke of those objectives as Kentucky prepared for a three-game exhibition series in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, beginning today.
Brandon Knight scored 25 points and Josh Harrellson added a career-high 23 points and 14 rebounds as No. 11 Kentucky defeated No. 22 Louisville 78-63 on Friday in Louisville, Ky. The Wildcats (11-2) used their size to improve to 2-0 against their rivals since John Calipari became head coach. Kentucky dominated the smaller Cardinals (11-2) in the lane behind the stellar play of Harrellson, who took advantage while Louisville focused on Terrence Jones.
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Kentucky sure looks ready for Louisville. Terrence Jones scored 18 points and Brandon Knight added 17 points and eight assists as the No. 11 Wildcats rolled by Coppin State, 91-61, on Tuesday night in their final tune-up before a showdown with the rival Cardinals on New Year's Eve.
Freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had season-highs with 24 points and 19 rebounds to lead No. 3 Kentucky in a rough-and-tumble 69-62 victory over No. 4 Louisville on Saturday to extend the nation's longest home winning streak. Fellow freshman Anthony Davis added 18 points, all in the second half, for the Wildcats (13-1) in their annual in-state rivalry game that at times looked more like a free throw shooting contest with 52 fouls.
The Milwaukee South boys basketball team is bringing home some hardware from Kentucky. The Cardinals beat host Belfry, 71-58, in the championship game of the Appalachian Wireless Mountain Schoolboy Shootout tournament. South took a 32-24 halftime lead and won as Sedrick Sanders and Raymont McElroy scored 17 points each and Martin Gross added 12.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - DeMarcus Cousins had 19 points and 15 rebounds, and No. 2 Kentucky beat 15th-ranked Tennessee 74-45 Saturday and advanced back to the Wildcats' accustomed spot in the Southeastern Conference tournament championship game. Kentucky (31-2) will play Mississippi State today, looking to add a 26th tournament title to the 44th regular season championship the Wildcats won in coach John Calipari's first season.
Border bragging rights will be on the line for the first girls basketball Ohio vs. Kentucky Classic at Centerville High School. Deeply rooted basketball traditions will clash Saturday, Feb. 7. At 2:15 p.m. reigning D-II state champion Alter faces Boone County, ranked No. 7 in Kentucky and led by Jacy Bradley and Lauren Bowling. Beavercreek vs. Scott County follows at 4 p.m. Sparking Scott County will be Madisen Webb and Kristen Stainback while 'Creek is highlighted by Stanford recruit Mikaela Ruef.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Christian Watford hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Indiana a 73-72 victory over top-ranked Kentucky on Saturday night. Watford finished with 20 points, giving the Hoosiers their first upset of a top-ranked team since taking down Duke in the 2002 NCAA tournament and setting off a wild scene. Fans stormed the court as officials looked at the replay before counting the basket.
