According to credit rating giant Experian, which recently analyzed the records of 100,000 people on its books, the average credit score for the typical Brit was 763 out of 1,000. To gain a "fair" credit record you need a score of 721 or above, with 61.9% of the population making the grade. Whatever happens to consumer mortgage demand in the wake of the rise to 4.75%, plenty of mums and dads struggling to pay off their mortgages may well beat a path to the door of the tiny Kent Reliance Building Society. According to a recent survey by chartered surveyors' professional body RICS, the majority of first-timers who do manage to claw their way onto the property ladder only do so because mum and dad have stepped into the breach.
