Shockwaves ran through the criminal justice system last February when Cole County Circuit Judge Richard B. Callahan exonerated a man who served nearly 15 years in prison for a murder he didn't commit. Joshua Kezer was found guilty of the 1992 murder of Angela Mischelle Lawless at a jury trial in Scott County. Former U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof, last year's Republican gubernatorial candidate, led the prosecution.
VOTERS in the 2nd Congressional District technically have a choice of three candidates on Nov. 2: Democratic incumbent Glenn Nye, Republican Scott Rigell and independent Kenny Golden. The race, however, is essentially between Nye and Rigell. Golden, who broke from the Republican party rather than fight for the nomination, simply lacks the resources and clout needed to mount an effective campaign.
The three men seeking election this fall in the 2nd Congressional District will meet in a Norfolk church tonight for their second joint forum. S. Rep. Glenn Nye, the Democratic incumbent, and challengers Scott Rigell, a Republican, and Kenny Golden, an independent, are to participate in the 7 p.m. forum at 2nd Calvary Baptist Church at 2940 Corprew Ave. The forum is open to the public.

Georgia Tech quarterback Reggie Ball has been ruled academically ineligible for the Gator Bowl. Cornerback Kenny Scott also is academically ineligible, the school said Wednesday. You're disappointed for the young men, and you're disappointed for the team," coach Chan Gailey said. "Although this is a very, very bad ending to the careers of these two young men, we can't forget the contributions they have made to the Georgia Tech program the last four years.
HOUSTON -- Nevada's Jeff Rowe threw two touchdown passes, one of them covering 79 yards to Fresno State's Paul Williams, to help the West beat the East 21-3 on Saturday night in the 82nd East-West Shrine Game. With the West ahead 14-3 late in the first half, Rowe found Williams running down the right sideline as defensive back Kenny Scott of Georgia Tech fell about midfield. Williams hauled in the pass at about the East 40 and sprinted into the end zone. It was the second-longest TD pass in Shrine history, eclipsed only by an 80- yarder 80 years ago.
Clarinet fanciers take note: A concert Saturday night at Duquesne University will provide the rare opportunity to hear four members of the clarinet family of instruments on a single program. The Pittsburgh Symphony's Ron Samuels will be Mr. Versatility by performing on the standard B-flat clarinet, "piccolo" clarinet in E flat, bass clarinet and basset horn. The program will open with a clarinet solo written by Bela Kovacs in honor of Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. Samuels, playing E- flat and B-flat clarinets, will be joined for opera composer Amilcare Ponchielli's Quartet by flutist Rhian Kenny, oboist Scott Bell and pianist Rodrigo Ojeda.
