BELLEVUE, Iowa - Wm. Kenneth "Ken" Stein, 86, of Bellevue, formerly of Freeport, Ill., died Saturday, June 25, 2005, in Bellevue. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Embury United Methodist Church, 515 S. Galena Ave., Freeport, with the Rev. D. Robin Benson, of Embury, and Pastor Paul Gammelin, of St. John Lutheran Church, Bellevue, officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Woodbine (Ill.) Cemetery. Friends may call after 10 am Wednesday at the church.

ATLANTA - Former President Jimmy Carter defended his harsh criticism of Israeli policy in his latest book, saying Friday he hopes to erode the "impenetrable wall" that blocks the American public from seeing the plight of Palestinians. ATLANTA - Fourteen members of an advisory board to Jimmy Carter's human rights organization resigned Thursday to protest his new book, which criticizes Israeli policy in the Palestinian territories. The resignations from The Carter Center board are the latest backlash against the former president's book Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, which has drawn fire from Jewish groups, been attacked by fellow Democrats and led to the resignation last month of Kenneth Stein, a center fellow and a longtime Carter adviser.
