Andy Roddick reached No. 1 in the world in 2003 shortly after he won the U.S. Open. The American tennis public, looking for its next generation superstar, had in Roddick a young, brash, 21-year-old talent to confidently step up as Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi began their descent from the spotlight.
Australian Lleyton Hewitt, at age 20, was the youngest player in the game's history to be ranked No. 1 in the world and won two Grand Slam titles before turning 22. A country that produced some of the sport's greatest stars - Rod Laver, Roy Emerson, John Newcombe, Ken Rosewall - had in Hewitt another to carry on Australia's storied tradition.

An obituary can tell you the story of what someone did in his or her life. A memorial service can tell you the stories of what that someone did for the lives of others.
Jack Kramer, upon the news of his passing Sept. 12 at the age of 88, was referred to by many connected to him in the tennis world as the sport's most important figure in its history. But he probably didn't realize how much he directly affected all 46 years of Tracy Austin's existence.
