Hundreds were on hand April 24 at Portsmouth City Park for the grand opening of Pokey Smokey II, the successor to the miniature train that operated there from the 1960s until 2005, when safety concerns ended the popular ride. With support from the Beazley Foundation, APM Terminals and numerous other groups and individuals, the Churchland-based Southeast Virginia Community Foundation led fundraising efforts to replace the original train. Churchland Elementary School has the distinction of donating the most from a school, more than $1,300. Foundation director Judi Luffman and vice president Don Comer joined Mayor Ken Wright and Councilman Bill Moody for the first ride.

As early as February, District Atty. Gen. Bill Gibbons recognized critical staffing problems at the local rape crisis center and sought help to correct them.
At the time, several experienced nurses at the Memphis Sexual Assault Resource Center had been terminated when the city enforced its residency requirement. The change put "a strain on MSARC's ability to successfully handle the caseload," Gibbons wrote Feb. 9 to Ken Moody, the city director who oversees the sexual-assault center.

Martha Harrison "Nina" Moody, 86, widow of A. Maxey Moody, died Nov. 17, 2006. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Susan and John Chappell of Dinwiddie, Art and Amanda Moody of Chester, Libby and Ken Bourne of Midlothian, Harrison and Debbie Moody, Nancy and Will Hudgins, all of Blackstone. Nina was survived by her 16 grandchildren; a brother, John Harrison and wife Olivia of Blackstone; and sisters, Lois Littlejohn, of Lexington, S.C., Emily Dabney of Richmond, Hope Mitchell and husband, Ben T., of McKenney; and brother-In-Law, John and Betty Lou Moody of Darvills.
Martha loved her family and friends and was an active member of the Butterwood United Methodist Church, D.A.R., and The Rose Society of Dinwiddie.

The Brick Store Museum will open its newest exhibition, "Camp Maine: Rustic Furniture & Accessories, 1860-1940," from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m on Monday.
Presented in association with Ken, Ida and Kate Manko of Moody, the exhibition showcases rustic late-19th- and early-20th-century furniture and related items from Maine and northern New England.
