LOCAL, STATE & GOLF SELF, KU BB ADD TWO WALK-ONS: Kansas coach Bill Self announced Sunday the addition of walk-ons Justin Wesley and Niko Roberts. Wesley, a 6-foot-8, 205-pound forward and transfer from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, is the younger brother of KU great Keith Langford.
Over the years, we've had some great bands stop and play here in Boise. Sometimes, they love it here so much they come back. Wednesday, September 28, we continue our winning streak. The Gourds are Kev Russell on guitar, mandolin and vocals; Jimmy Smith on bass, guitar and vocals; Claude Bernard on accordion, guitar, keyboard and vocals; Keith Langford on drums, percussion and harmonica; and Max Johnston on fiddle, banjo, lap steel, guitar, mandolin and, you guessed it, vocals. So, what's so special about an Austin, Texas, band with mandolin, banjo and lap steel? Aren't they a dime a baker's dozen in that part of the country? Yes, but there's something a little nutty and special about these guys.
CHRIS LANDSBERGER/THE CAPITAL-JOURNAL Kansas guard Keith Langford matched a career high with 27 points during Saturday's game.

The Austin, Texas-based country-rock quintet the Gourds are a legendary live act, and befitting a legend they are more often talked about than actually experienced. Together more than 15 years, the band - frontman Kevin Russell, bassist Jimmy Smith, keyboardist Claude Bernard, drummer Keith Langford, and multi-instrumentalist Max Johnston - has recorded nine albums of alternative honky-tonk. But it's been on club stages across the country that they have made their living and their reputation.
