Portfolio theory holds that the incorporation of asset classes with a low correlation to an existing portfolio can increase investment yields without increasing the risks involved. This risk-reducing quality is traceable to the effects of diversification and the impact of using a mix of asset classes that are influenced by significantly different factors.
