'Mildred Pierce - don't ever tell anyone what she did. And Kate Winslet didn't want to know.
Letters - Letter to the editor
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - "Slumdog Millionaire" lived up to its underdog theme at Sunday's Golden Globes, sweeping all four of its categories, including best drama and director for Danny Boyle. Kate Winslet won two Globes all on her own, best dramatic actress for "Revolutionary Road" and supporting actress for "The Reader." "The Wrestler" also had two, dramatic actor for Mickey Rourke and best song for Bruce Springsteen.
LONDON -- British movie star Kate Winslet has separated from her film director husband Sam Mendes after nearly seven years of marriage, their law firm said Monday. The surprise split puts an end to a golden couple of Britain's show business world, buttressed by matching Oscars and a host of commercial successes and artistic accolades. The pair's law firm, Schillings, said the split was "entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement.
'Contagion' Director Steven Soderbergh's "Contagion" is more terrifying than any horror movie, and that's because it could happen. While the film is more or less a thriller, it has a lethal and fast-spreading virus at its center. It's a virus that can be compared to SARS or the Avian Flu, so viewers can relate. Soderbergh`s film follows the beginning of the virus up to the founding of a cure, and it interestingly presents the spread on several different platforms. A number of stories interweave through the feature film, including the scientists working on finding a cure, the CDC people on the ground looking to contain the outbreak and, most importantly, the victims and those trying to stay safe. "Contagion" does well in separating itself from other outbreak pics because of its methodica...

LOS ANGELES - "Mad Men," the sharply observed drama of a changing 1960s America, captured 19 Emmy nominations Thursday to lead the series pack, with the melodramatic miniseries "Mildred Pierce" starring Kate Winslet grabbing a top 21 bids. Mad Men" has a chance to repeat for a fourth consecutive year as best drama. "Modern Family," last year's top comedy series, was the most-nominated sitcom with 17 bids.
In stores: CONTAGION (2011, Warner, PG-13, $29) -- The tenuousness of civilized society is a theme that Steven Soderbergh examines in grim detail in this chiller about a deadly virus that counts a Midwestern business exec (Gwyneth Paltrow) as its patient zero. Paltrow brings the deadly bug back from Hong Kong and, in a matter of weeks, millions are dead and millions more are desperate for a vaccine. The cast members (Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law, Jennifer Ehle, Laurence Fishburne) are top-notch but the disease itself -- transmitted though elevator buttons and door handles -- is the real star. "Contagion" is a disaster thriller done right. Extras: featurettes.
ROME - American filmmakers dominate the lineup of this year's Venice Film Festival, where George Clooney and four others will be competing for the Golden Lion, while Madonna, Al Pacino and Steven Soderbergh will premiere their latest directorial efforts. The strong lineup also includes Roman Polanski's "Carnage," an adaptation of the Broadway show "God of Carnage" featuring Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz; David Cronenberg's take on psychoanalysis "A Dangerous Method;" and "Shame," a drama by British director Steve McQueen.
There's something about "Mildred Pierce. The period melodrama about a self-made woman with a spoiled, backstabbing daughter earned Joan Crawford her first and only Oscar for the 1945 film version of the James M. Cain novel. And on Thursday, HBO's lavish remake earned the 63rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards' highest number of nominations -- 21 -- including those for best miniseries or movie, lead actress for Kate Winslet and director for Todd Haynes.
