  • Most artists learn to use light - even love light - but watercolorist Kate Gray seems to have peeled back some of light's mysteries by enveloping it and embracing it with nuances of color, form and even words bringing to her work an appreciation of the magic of time, place and circumstance. Her words and her art are, in effect, Columbia stories by a Columbia artist, reflected in a new show titled "Lights, Lines and Stories," and recently installed at The Tiger Hotel.

  • Watercolor artist Kate Gray has been making a lot of tough choices lately and loving it.   • Columbia artist Kate Gray works Sunday on the traffic box at Broadway and Tenth Street. Gray is one of three artists who have painted downtown signal boxes as part of the Office of Cultural Affairs program that is designed to make the boxes more resistant to graffiti and add to the downtown streetscape. The other decorated boxes are at Broadway and Ninth Street and Broadway and Hitt Street.

  • Members of the community are coming together to try to keep a man who killed a Putnam County sheriff's deputy in prison, while the family of the man who killed him are wondering: Where's his mercy? Deputy John Janey was killed at age 32 in 1989 while attempting to arrest Robert Gray, who allegedly tried to set fire to a home on Cow Creek near Hurricane. A struggle ensued and Janey was shot three times - in the side, chest and head.

  • NEW YORK - Actor-writer Spalding Gray, who laid bare his life in a series of acclaimed monologues such as "Swimming to Cambodia" while scoring big-screen success in "Kate and Leopold" and "The Paper," was confirmed dead on Monday. The body of Gray, 62, was pulled out of the East River off Greenpoint, Brooklyn, on Sunday, two months after he walked out of his Manhattan apartment and disappeared.
