MILLINOCKET - Brookfield Renewable Power might have plans formulated as early as February or March for the reopening of the Katahdin Paper Co. LLC mill.
The power company is searching for a partner to operate a proposed 30-megawatt biomass boiler needed to power the paper mill and for companies to buy the electricity the boiler would generate, Daniel Whyte, a Brookfield vice president, told the Town Council on Monday night.

MILLINOCKET - It has lost at least $57 million since its June 2004 restart, but the Katahdin Avenue paper mill "has a world-class machine" and a commitment from Fraser Papers to reopen the mill if biomass energy negotiations end favorably, a Fraser executive said Tuesday.
The mill has good equipment and [the mill's No. 11 paper machine] has always been categorized as a world-class machine," said Glenn McMillan, whose Toronto-based company manages the Katahdin Paper Co. LLC mills in East Millinocket and Millinocket for multibillion-dollar conglomerate Brookfield Asset Management of Toronto.

EAST MILLINOCKET - The Katahdin Paper Co. LLC paper mill on Main Street will close in 60 days if a pending deal to buy it and a closed sister mill in Millinocket is not consummated, company officials say.
Katahdin Paper parent company Brookfield Asset Management of Toronto will issue the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice, which provides a 60-day warning of a closure, on Tuesday, said Andrew Willis, a company spokesman.

EAST MILLINOCKET - The July closing of a mill in Port Cartier, Quebec, will increase pulp operations at the Katahdin Paper Co. LLC mill, but no new jobs are likely to come from it, company officials said Tuesday.
Uniforet Inc. closed its bleached chemi-thermo-mechanical market pulp mill in July, eliminating as many as 80 jobs. The closing of that facility, which Katahdin Paper was leasing to make pulp for its Millinocket plant, opened the door for more pulp production in town, said Glenn Saucier, Katahdin Paper's director of human resources and spokesman.
-
EAST MILLINOCKET - A lightning strike late Tuesday stopped production at the Katahdin Paper Co. LLC mill for a workday on Wednesday, company officials said.
The strike hit a Katahdin Paper substation about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, tripping computers and the plant's electrical grid but otherwise doing no damage, Glenn Saucier, a human resources manager and company spokesman said. The plant was getting back on line by 6 p.m. Wednesday.
