  • Noble: An anonymous Kansas woman who left a $400 tip for a waitress struggling to pay her way through college. Marlena Hayes is a full-time student at Kansas City Kansas Community College. She studies respiratory therapy and works full- time as a waitress at Mimi's Cafe to pay her way. On Tuesday night, a patron at Mimi's overheard Miss Hayes discussing her financial dilemma with a coworker: The cost of books was steep and she was worried about having to work seven days a week in order to make ends meet. When Miss Hayes later picked up the check from one of her tables, she found that the diner had left a note: "I overheard. Good luck with school. Here's $400 for books." And with the note was $400 in cash.

  • KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A dean of a Kansas City community college is recovering after being stabbed in the neck while he stood with other administrators awaiting the arrival of Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon. The stabbing occurred Tuesday morning at Penn Valley Community College, where Nixon was to have held a news conference. Nixon was still at the airport at the time.
