BERLIN - Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson transformed themselves into Henry VIII's second wife, Anne Boleyn, and her sister in "The Other Boleyn Girl" - helped by costumes that, Johansson said, were "characters in themselves. The best part of "The First Grader" are these five words, placed under the title: "Based on a true story. If this were not the factual tale of a man named Kimani Ng'ang'a Marunge, who fought against the British colonial powers to free Kenya and then returned to school to learn to read at age 84, this film could be dismissed as just another emotionally manipulative drama. It follows such a simple and predictable narrative arc that the viewer not only sees what's coming next but can predict events right down the line.
