Many victims, victim advocates, and even law enforcement believe that protective orders are "just a piece of paper," suggesting that they do not work or are not effective. This study examined protective order effectiveness by following 210 women for 6 months after obtaining a protective order. There are four main themes that were identified from the study results. First, protective orders were not violated for half of the women in the sample during the 6-month follow-up period. Second, even among those who experienced violations, there were significant reductions in abuse and violence. Third, overall, women were less fearful of future harm from the PO partner at the 6-month follow-up, and a vast majority felt the protective order was fairly or extremely effective. Fourth, stalking emerg...

Governor Christie's pledge to reshape the New Jersey Supreme Court isn't going so well. He's now got a "no-show" justice on his hands.
Associate Justice Roberto Rivera-Soto says he's not going to write decisions or cast votes indefinitely -- the most important part of his $185,000-a-year job. He's going to abstain, which has earned him the unflattering moniker as "the Abstaining Justice" from his angry colleagues.

THE RECENT mob killing of an alleged robber in Llandilo, Westmoreland on April 18, 2005 has sparked disparaging cries of shame and consternation from several quarters. For what it's worth, I must add my voice to the group of appalled Jamaicans who must helplessly watch as our once civil society rapidly descends into the bottomless pit of immorality. I am very sensitive to street 'justice' because way back in the 1979 I was almost mobbed.
In a society such as ours, where decent people are often predated by criminal elements set on establishing a new order, wherein fear is used to rule over a defeated people, the sight of a cornered accused criminal triggers a self-preservative response. The accused becomes the embodiment of all that is evil. All the robberies, rapes, murders, pain and su...

How clean is clean and at what price? We can no longer tolerate a "regulate and punish" mentality driven by a "lower is better" theory of environmental activism that goes well beyond protecting public health with an adequate margin of safety. Science based on what is "potentially harmful" is dangerous.
EPA is obligated to discharge its duties under the Clean Air Act to ensure that the nation's air quality standards are protective of public health. In that spirit, we should support EPA's decision to include policy options in the Proposed Rule that consider a more stringent ozone standard.
When EPA issues the Proposed Rule, it will formally frame the debate for the public comment process. If it doesn't include consideration of the current standard as a policy option, the opportunity to do...

Harvey won a historic election to the Board of Supervisors in 1977. As the first out gay politician elected in California (and only the third in the country at that time), Harvey helped change the gay and lesbian community from one in which we sat in bars and said, "I'm out and I'm proud," to one where we proclaimed in public, "I'm out. I'm proud. I vote. I count." As a peace activist and as a lesbian activist, it showed me not only that individuals can make a huge difference; it showed that electoral politics can make a difference for those who get involved in campaigning for others. For San Francisco's lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, the [Harvey Milk] campaigns built a base of community power and voting power that henceforth could not be ignored.
I remember t...

Family members of several former Connecticut residents killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks had similar reactions Monday to the news that Osama bin Laden is dead.
All were pleased that some measure of justice has been served, but said that was tempered by the pain they still feel over their lost loved ones.
