The trial of Paterson Councilwoman Vera Ames-Garnes on charges that she wrongly interfered when confronting a Prospect Park police officer about to issue a traffic citation in Paterson was postponed Monday until May 7.
The delay was granted after the defense requested transcripts of testimony before a grand jury connected to the case. That grand jury declined to charge Ames-Garnes on the only indictable offense she faced, inciting a riot.

What's new: The trial of Paterson Councilwoman Vera Ames-Garnes, scheduled for May 7, was rescheduled for June 11 in Hawthorne Municipal Court. Officials attributed the postponement to Ames- Garnes having a death in the family outside the state. This is the second postponement of the trial, in which the councilwoman is charged with wrongly interfering when confronting a Prospect Park police officer who was about to issue a traffic citation in Paterson in 2007. The initial trial date was April 5. The first delay was granted by a judge because the defense requested, in preparation for the trial, transcripts of testimony before a grand jury that investigated the case.
Background: A grand jury declined to charge Ames-Garnes on the only indictable offense she faced, inciting a riot. The rema...
