  • Its that time again. Back to school, back to the dinner rush and back to the search for fast, healthy recipes. We want healthy meals that come together quickly without extensive ingredient lists. And we want them now. There are so many cookbooks, articles, blogs and discussions on this very topic that the search can be overwhelming. My recipe collection contains a few favorites that survived the rotation through many years of fall weeknight dinners squeezed between school, work and evening sports practices. Some feature inexpensive seasonal produce, such as the sweet red bell peppers in the sausage and pasta dish. • NOTE: Online video; See these players in action, in the kitchen at www.newhavenregister.com/life My search for cookbooks seems endless. I could spend hours in a bookstore looking through them. How would I get my fix if brick and mortar stores became extinct? I don't get the same experience shopping for cookbooks online because I need to make sure that the book tells a story, which is difficult to do in cyberspace. A new book in my collection, Julie Loria's "Diamond Dishes: From the Kitchens of Baseball's Biggest Stars," Lyons Press $24.95, does just that, giving baseball fans and food lovers a behind-the-scenes look at their favorite Major League Baseball players with stories told through memorable meals, family recipes, color photos of the players in the kitchen and anecdotes.

  • The trend toward takeout has simple reasoning. "People enjoy eating in the comfort of their own home," explains Chuck Hickey, a cashier at Alto Cinco, 526 Westcott St. "Eating out is a different experience that people aren't always up for. People work long hours and don't always want to cook but want good food, and takeout gives them the opportunity to get that." Luckily, there are as many options as there are restaurants--locally owned and chain franchises. At our store you basically walk in and go to the cooler, grab something and go," explains Pasta's Daily Bread manager Susi Ricker. "We have things available all day from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. until it sells out." This includes a rotating daily sandwich as well as a slew of salads. "We have chicken penne salad, broccoli salad, chic...
