  • After enduring suicide attempts ("The Hours"), cheating husbands ("Far From Heaven"), mystery ailments ("Safe"), broken romances ("The End of the Affair"), and a very persistent serial killer ("Hannibal"), Julianne Moore longed to lighten up. Now with "Laws of Attraction," a new romantic comedy opening Friday, Moore has dried her eyes, and left the mantle of serious actress behind.

  • Julianne Moore made out memorably with Toni Collette in "The Hours" while Annette Bening dallied with suburban neighbor Kristen Chenoweth in "Running with Scissors," so their resumes are already sufficiently queer to play a lesbian couple in "The Kids Are All Right," the next project from director Lisa Cholodenko ("High...

  • In stores CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE. (2011, Warner, PG-13, $30) -- Suburban Everyman Cal Weaver (a never-better Steve Carell) is thrown for a loop when his wife (Julianne Moore) of 27 years tells him she's had an affair and wants a divorce. Newly single, Cal is befriended by a ladykiller (Ryan Gosling) who gives him a makeover and teaches him how to be a player. That's just the beginning of this charming movie, which boasts inappropriate crushes, hilarious trysts and scene-stealing supporting turns by Emma Stone and Marisa Tomei. Best of all, the action is rendered with a grown-up sense of nuance and intimacy. "Crazy Stupid Love" is an irresistible treat. Extras: deleted scenes and interviews.

  • 'Crazy, Stupid, Love' Judging by its moronic title, "Crazy, Stupid, Love" seems like just another bad romantic comedy easily thrown into the abyss of crappy films in this genre. Yeah, there are some of those attributes found here, but, for the most part, directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, the makers of the underrated "I Love You Phillip Morris," give the viewers a smart flick that displays most of the emotions found in and around the idea of love. Toss in fine performances from an A-list cast -- Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone and Steve Carell -- and "Crazy, Stupid, Love" stands as a picture that holds its own with the better romantic comedies out over the last few years. The focus of "Crazy, Stupid, Love" is the marriage of Cal (Carell) and Emily (Moore), a relationship t...

  • Julianne Moore has a loving new way to help struggling kids in America: send a valentine. Just before Christmas, the 47-year-old actress read to elementary school students and met with parents in White Oak, Tenn., on behalf of Save the Children. The organization aims to improve children's quality of life through literacy, physical activity and nutrition programs.

  • For one actress, it was about stepping off in a new direction. For the other, it was a chance to work with somebody she long admired. Amanda Seyfried was "terrified" when she got the title role in "Chloe," Canadian director Atom Egoyan's erotic thriller that opens in limited release Friday. In it, the 24-year-old actress plays a sophisticated call girl who is hired by a married gynecologist, played by Julianne Moore, to test the fidelity of her husband (Liam Neeson).

  • OPENING THIS WEEK (2 CHILES) CHLOE A woman (Julianne Moore) suspects that her husband (Liam Neeson) is cheating, so she hires a young prostitute (Amanda Seyfried) to seduce him. What ensues is a mild variation of Fatal Attraction with a Sapphic twist. This is an artsy, pretentious sexual thriller, directed by Atom Egoyan, that immediately calls to mind those direct-to-video erotic films of the 1990s starring Tanya Roberts, Shannon Tweed, and Andrew Stevens. Moore does what she can with the shallow role assigned her; the rest of the cast mostly makes concerned or crazy faces as they slog through the nonsense. Rated R. 96 minutes. Regal DeVargas, Santa Fe. (Robert Nott)
