The final straw for retired Prince George's County police officer Percel Alston occurred during the 2009 General Assembly session. A bill had been proposed that would bar defense lawyers from challenging the credibility of police officers when they act as witnesses by bringing up accusations of misconduct that had been disproved. But Del. Joseph F. Vallario Jr., the controversial chairman of the influential House Judiciary Committee and a defense lawyer himself, refused to let the committee vote on the legislation.

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday voted to recommend that the full Senate confirm Andre M. Davis to become a 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals judge and Thomas E. Perez to become assistant U.S. attorney general for civil rights. The Democratic-led committee voted 16-3 in favor of Davis, with the panel's 12 Democrats and four of its seven Republicans voting for him.
