In 2003, Michigan State University (MSU) announced the establishment of degree and certificate programs in judicial administration. These programs address the need of court employees and others interested in joining the profession to obtain a credential that judges and others hiring court managers will recognize as providing the knowledge, skills, and abilities qualifying them to administer courts. In so doing, MSU joined a line of universities and law schools that attempted to establish and maintain viable, highly credentialed programs in the fluidly defined profession of court administration. Here, Nafisi and Conner discuss why MSU has been willing to undertake this initiative when other universities have lost interest or ended their programs.
Douglas discusses the judicial management course at the University of South Carolina, which is structured to introduce students to the judicial branch, explain the importance of the judiciary in a democratic system. and then define what judicial administration is. It provides students with a firm knowledge of the major issues facing court administrators today. Here, he comments that case discussions of practical problems confronting administrators, simulations of realistic occurrences, and in-depth discussions of important areas of research are needed to both keep students engaged and help them understand the relevance of the course materials to their careers.
