The commission Gov. Joe Manchin tasked with reforming West Virginias judicial system came to a series of politically savvy suggestions in their report released this week. State lawmakers and reform advocates on Monday praised the commissions measures as valuable first steps. Others say the recommendations, even if they are turned into law, will do little to reform the states judiciary. Manchin formed the 10-member Independent Commission on Judicial Reform to look at broad systemic judicial reforms, including ending judicial elections and adopting a merit-based system to select judges.
