Temple Beth El is Michigan's oldest Jewish congregation, espousing the philosophy of reformed Judaism that evolved in the middle of the 18th century (i.e. relatively recently in the 5,800 year history of Judaism). Non-reformed Jews have traditionally banned the playing of musical instruments on the Sabbath, so it was only the rise of reformed Judaism that brought the organ, piano, and choir together.

In Judaism, [David Gelernter] set out to record not the rituals, the laws, the history, the philosophy that are integral to Judaism, but to set down what he calls "the grand scheme". He names it Torah she'ba'lev - Tbrah of the heart - his addition to the written Torah and the oral Torah. The proselyte, Rabbi [Harold M. Schulweis] writes in a thoughtful, informative essay, "comes to us from the outside and leads us to look inside." As a result, "the view of Judaism is enlarged. [Joel L. Kraemer]'s descriptions of Maimonides' influential works, notably Mishneh Torah ("the benchmark for all subsequent writing on Jewish jurisprudence," Kraemer writes) and The Guide of the Perplexed (the "celebrated masterpiece"), will be welcomed by nonspecialist readers.
