  • Baseball MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Twins welcomed Josh Willingham to the team on Thursday, a move that had many bracing for a wave goodbye to Michael Cuddyer.

  • The Pirates are buyers at the trade deadline, an unfamiliar position for a franchise that hasn't tasted a pennant race in more than a decade or posted a winning record since 1992. General manager Neal Huntington sent his scouts to spy on dozens of players in the past few weeks. The list of possibilities includes high-profile names such as Hunter Pence, B.J. Upton, Jason Giambi, Carlos Pena, Koji Uehara and Wandy Rodriguez. Players such as Josh Willingham, Chris Iannetta, David DeJesus and Craig Breslow -- role players who can help in a playoff push -- also are on the radar.

  • WASHINGTON - Ian Desmond hit a RBI single to break a seventh- inning tie, and was then at the center of a wild sacrifice-fly double-play two plays later as the Washington Nationals beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-2. Josh Willingham led off the seventh with a single, and Roger Bernadina reached on an error when centerfielder Drew Stubbs collided with left fielder Jonny Gomes. Desmond's RBI single gave Washington a 3-2 lead, and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out.

  • As soon as Washington Nationals team doctor Wiemi Douoguih began operating on pitcher Scott Olsen, a decision crystallized that could be one of the key points of the team's offseason. The 25-year-old left-hander was perhaps the centerpiece of a trade that brought him and outfielder Josh Willingham from the Florida Marlins for second baseman Emilio Bonifacio. But surgery Thursday to mend the small tear in his left labrum shut him down for the season, which ended after just 11 starts in four months.

  • It seems hard to believe just three months ago Josh Willingham was a sporadically used corner outfielder hitting .129 and fighting for playing time. His competition is now on the Washington Nationals' bench or in the minors because Willingham's torrid bat has made them auxiliary pieces. The 30-year-old has gone from a scuffling reserve to one of the cornerstones of an offense that is looking too potent to belong to a last-place team. The Nationals moved Willingham to right field - a spot he had never played in the majors - planted him in the middle of their lineup and started fielding phone calls about his availability.

  • Jeremy Hermida hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the fifth inning, and Josh Willingham added a three-run double in the eighth to lead the Florida Marlins to a 9-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday at Wrigley Field. Dontrelle Willis (7-3) worked seven innings for the Marlins, allowing four runs and seven hits.

  • FLORIDA MARLINS The club hopes OF/C/1B Josh Willingham, recently recalled from Class AA Carolina, can provide the type of spark RF Miguel Cabrera did last season.

  • WASHINGTON -- Giving up a pair of solo home runs shouldn't be too big of a deal for a starting pitcher, but they were killer blows Thursday night for Pirates left-hander Zach Duke. Adam Dunn and Josh Willingham homered in the fourth inning, propelling the Washington Nationals past the Pirates, 4-2, for a three-game sweep at Nationals Park.
