  • The crop of fantasy outfielders for 2011 appears thinner than in recent seasons. Injuries took a toll on some of the better outfielders in the game last year, and seemingly fewer outfielders excel in multiple statistical categories. It can be difficult to determine a consensus top fantasy choice among outfielders, and the top spot in the rankings is interchangeable between four men: Ryan Braun, Carlos Gonzalez, Josh Hamilton and Carl Crawford. Braun has supplied the most consistent results of this quartet. Even in a down year in 2010, he hit over .300 and drove in more than 100 runs. He had an unfruitful middle of the season, playing with a bruised elbow. He overcame that setback in the season's final two months; he hit .364 and slugged .583 in August and September.

  • [Leon Powe] had a couple of looks where I thought, 'Wow, Leon got to the basket and made a good move," [Ben Braun] says. "Then here's [JOSH CHILDRESS] coming out of the rafters, it seems, and he blocks the shot. I'm saying, 'Whoa.' He's just that type of player.

  • Making just his second start of the season, sophomore Josh Biggs pitched the University of Evansville baseball team past visiting Saint Louis 6-4 at Braun Stadium on Tuesday night. Biggs threw the nine-inning complete game, giving up four runs, all unearned, five hits and one walk while striking out six. UE improved to 18-12, snapping a three-game skid, while SLU fell to 20- 13.

  • Power offense erupts in 10-8 victory GREENSBORO, N.C. - Ryan Braun smacked four hits, Grant Richardson reached base for the 27th straight game and Josh Murray belted a grand slam homer as the West Virginia Power erupted for a 10-8 win over the Greensboro Grasshoppers at First Horizon Park here.

  • Josh Poston was trying to put pressure on Carson-Newman point guard Braun Dabbs. The USC Aiken freshman had just hit two free throws to put the Pacers up by five points with 5 seconds to go. Poston thought Dabbs would drive to the basket; instead, Dabbs pulled up for a quick 3- point attempt and Poston clobbered him.

  • MILWAUKEE - Pirates first baseman Adam LaRoche left Saturday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers with a left knee contusion. White batting in the sixth inning, LaRoche fouled a ball off his knee. He was checked by the trainer and stayed in the game to finish the at-bat, fouling out to third baseman Ryan Braun. In the bottom of the inning, Josh Phelps replaced LaRoche at first base.

  • MORGANTOWN - West Virginia published its preseason football depth chart Friday, and for anyone who was paying attention during the spring, there are virtually no surprises. With the exception of a few modifications for injuries and the insertion of a handful of transfers who were not around last season, it is essentially the same as it was at the end of spring drills.

..., but that's because Don Barclay and Jeff Braun missed the spring after having shoulder surgeries and Josh Jenkins hurt a knee in the spring game. So while B...

  • Zack Greinke struck out 10 over seven effective innings and the Milwaukee Brewers got back to their winning ways at home with a 5-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night in Miller Park. Greinke (7-2) provided his best performance so far with the Brewers as Milwaukee came into play a half game behind St. Louis in the NL Central.

  • MORGANTOWN - Coaches, particularly those of the football variety, are notorious for burning the candle at both ends. Dick Vermeil was famous for sleeping in his office. Jon Gruden, when he coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was known as Jon 3:11 because that's the time - 3:11 a.m. - when he started his workday. Nick Saban once turned down a chance to dine with George W. Bush because it conflicted with his workday.
