PETERSBURG - Folks gathered to honor a founding father of the African nation of Liberia yesterday during a ceremony that coincides with a visit of Liberia's president to the region.
Ambassador William V.S. Bull Sr. was the guest of honor as about 40 people gathered for a wreath-laying service to honor Joseph Jenkins Roberts. The event was hosted by the Liberian Association of Virginia at the Roberts Memorial.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he was employed with the Juanita Jardine Public School as a sixth grade school teacher. He was the son of the late Sr. and was predeceased by his stepfather Richmond Carr.

A former Assembly speaker and a top adviser to Governor Christie were chosen Wednesday to help lead the commission that will redraw the boundaries to New Jersey's U.S. House districts.
Democrats are expected to be led by former Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts, who served in that post from 2006 to 2010, said state Democratic Chairman John Wisniewski.

On Saturday, Aug. 1, more than 150 members of the Cooper family visited the Richard A. Stewart/Pocahontas Black History Museum in Petersburg, as part of their 180th anniversary celebration.
The descendents were in the Richmond and Petersburg area for the weekend, observing the 180th year since Joseph Jenkins Roberts left Pocahontas Island in Petersburg, taking most of the free negroes with him to Liberia, Africa, in 1829.

In some respects it seemed fitting that South Charleston was going for a third consecutive Class AAA football state championship in 2010. After all, it was the 40th anniversary of the completion of Charleston High Schools three-peat, the only one in Class AAA history. As all who follow high school football in West Virginia know, the Black Eagles were unable to reach that goal, having to forfeit their playoff semifinal win over Brooke for the use of players who had been suspended for their roles in a late-game brawl with Hurricane in the quarterfinals on Nov. 19. A teenage boy died Saturday morning after being injured in a crash in Bath County, police said.
Joseph A. Roberts, 15, of Williamsville was a passenger in a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that crashed about 5:30a.m., Virginia State Police said.
