Regardless the state of the economy, people are going to continue to seek medical treatment, especially emergency treatment when it's needed.
With that in mind SSM St. Joseph Health Center this week is opening the first phase of its newly renovated and expanded emergency department. The expansion is part of a $30 million project that began in January with the opening of a new intensive care unit at the hospital.

The hospital that started out in a small house on Chauncey Street in 1885 has since expanded to include 364 beds, 1,500 employees and major upgrades, renovations and technological advances. SSM St. Joseph's Health Center in St. Charles recently celebrated its 120th anniversary and is celebrating the booming growth that occurred in recent years.
SSM St. Joseph's Health Center, originally named St. Joseph's Hospital in 1885, has transformed from a small, community-based hospital offering mainly primary care services and some specialty services to a hospital that offers a cancer treatment center, the first and only electrophysiology lab in St. Charles County, extensive cardiovascular services and neurosurgery.

Six SSM St. Joseph employees have been named recipients of awards that the St. Charles County healthcare provider hands out in celebration of National Hospital Week.
The 2008 Lee Oppeau Excellence in Nursing Award went to Jeff Moomey, a registered nurse in surgical services at St. Joseph Health Center in St. Charles. The award is named in memory of the late Lee Oppeau, a nurse manager who worked for SSM.

It's not that I'm cynical. But my employer does pay me to be skeptical, so I'm wondering about the timing of last week's news conference to announce an agreement that would relocate the post office in St. Charles and allow SSM St. Joseph Health Center to expand. It comes more than two months after all the parties reached a tentative agreement on the deal, and on the heels of BJC HealthCare's public relations blitz concerning its new hospital in O'Fallon.

St. Charles officials have begun work to create a tax-increment financing district on the site of Lindenwood University's $30 million, mixed-use Town Center development, keeping in mind the project's impact on the future of the nearby SSM St. Joseph Health Center.
The fates of the project and the hospital could be very much entwined.

Lindenwood University has named Gaspare Calvaruso to its board of directors. Calvaruso is president of SSM St. Joseph Health Center in St. Charles, SSM St. Joseph Health Center in Wentzville and SSM St. Joseph Medical Park in St. Peters.
